FAQ

What is Deck-Guard?

Deck-Guard is a portable solar powered ultrasonic bird repeller.

How does ultrasonic work?

An ultrasonic wave is a sound wave vibrating at a frequency beyond the human hearing. The wave is emitted from a device (or an organ in the case of animals such as bats). The wave then hits an object and reflects of it (an echo). The devise will detect the reflect wave and measure its direction and the time it took to be reflected and the device would use that information to produce an image. It works pretty much like our ability to see. Light hits objects and is reflected off them and hits our eyes. An ultrasonic device "sees with sound" waves instead of light waves.

In the case of an ultrasonic bird repeller, the device emits the sound wave towards a bird and the high frequency wave, which can be heard by the bird, annoys the bird and forces them to move to another location.

Does ultrasonic actually repel birds?

Yes. Ultrasonic devices have been around since the early 1970's and have proven to be effective in repelling pests such as birds, rodents and deer to name a few.

Is the product humane?

Yes. Deck-Guard is designed to annoy birds with ultrasonic waves and force them to move. It does not harm them in any way.

How long does it take for Deck-Guard to be effective?

Once placed in a proper location, Deck-Guard takes about 5 to 10 days to become effective. It will take longer for territorial birds and birds during nesting season.

Won't birds get used to the ultrasound and ignore it after a while?

I unpackaged the Deck-Guard and it does not make any sound.

First, check to see if the small tab has been removed from the battery compartment, this will activate the batteries. Once the device is activated, the red LED light on the front will light up when motion is detected.

Be sure to place the Deck-Guard in an open area where the solar panel can absorb sunlight to charge the device.

If that doesn't work, try asking someone else if it is making sound. The Deck-Guard produces sound at a particular frequency that some people cannot hear. Some people may hear something as little as a clicking sound. This doesn't mean the product is broken, but the sound that is produced is merely out of your range of hearing.

The Deck-Guard produces sound but birds don't seem to be driven away.

Are there any other loud sounds in the immediate area that could be dampening the device's sound?

Is the device facing against the wind? Amplitude of sound waves can be reduced by wind.

Birds are very territorial. If they are nesting and have young in the immediate area, they may not leave despite the irritable sound.

Does the Deck-Guard repel birds from 360 degrees?

No. The Deck-Guard works unidirectionally and in a conical manner. It has a range of 30 feet by 15 degree vertical range and a 30 degree horizontal range in the direction it is facing. It may be helpful to invest in multiple units to repel in different directions.
